Vrijwilligersfeest !!

Vrijwilligersfeest !!

1.1                Causes of poverty

In the previous chapter, I have argued that poverty is to live below a certain threshold of human capability. The absolute minimum lies with being able to be a human, which means the capability to have health and the freedom to pursue what one values in life. For 40 per cent of the earth’s population, this is not as self-evident as the wealthier people experience. Poverty, as I said, is a lack of capabilities: a deficit in one’s combination of strength and might. But we can make one more distinction. The first is the case in which the might is itself a scarce resource, resulting in an equal level of poverty for those who have strength, but a higher level of poverty for those who lack strength. The second is the case in which there is might to distribute, but where it is distributed to unequal capabilities. These two cases, of lack of power and discrimination I will discuss now.

1.1.1                     Discrimination

1.1.2                     Lack of power

Adaptive preferences

Social exclusion

Ignorance
